My work plays with the idea of "thingness" in both ritual objects and in womanhood, specifically with regard tefillin use, which women have largely been denied access to. In these images, tefillin practice is “performed” with ribbons in place of traditional phylacteries. By using self-portraiture that interrogates subjectivity, femininity, tradition and transgression, I connect with historical moments of Jewish transgressive acts while incorporating both the antinomian and the nomos into my own expression.
